Fish, Flower, Vegetable and Garden Market
in the Heart of the City

Thewet Vegetable Market

Thewet Market is essentially one of the premier plant and garden markets in Bangkok, however, there are other markets in the vicinity, including a fish market, a vegetable market and a flower market.

While the fish and vegetable markets are situated just off the intersection of Samsen Road and Krung Kasem Road, the garden, plant and flower market flank both sides of Khlong Phadung Krung Kasem, which is west of Samsen Road, not far from the Tha Thewet River Pier, a little north of an area known as Banglamphu and part of the Dusit district of Bangkok.

Life around the Markets

Dusit is a rather sleepy sub-district of Bangkok, approximately 30 minutes upstream by passenger ferry boat from the BTS Skytrain station at Sapan Thaksin.

Life around these markets takes on a much slower pace, but not only that, it’s also a wonderful place to free yourself for a couple of hours while taking in many of the unique sights and sounds in a setting unlike some of the other modern shopping areas dotted around the inner city.

In the area near the river and next to the small wet market along the canal, there is a small ghetto catering for backpackers.

The Fish Market

Thewet market has its own unique charm as does its counterparts. Next to the busy main road there is a lively fish market selling a wide variety of fresh fish as well as some rather fat sardines deliciously prepared in small wicker baskets.

The Thai way of selling these fish is to place two steamed sardines facing each other in a basket. They are an extremely popular snack among the locals and sell for around twenty Baht, which is pretty cheap if you are on a tight budget.

The Flower Market

Pak Khlong Flower Market may be one of the nicest places to look for a whole variety of flowers in Bangkok. And this particular flower market is an excellent place to shop for beautiful blooms as they come into season, simply because there is such a wide range to choose. There is also a large selection of garden plants and other related items too.

Getting to the Market

Getting to the wet market by road is relatively easy, though it does depend a lot on the time of day and traffic conditions. However, a better alternative and a much more relaxing way would be to take the tourist riverboat.

Or perhaps you might even like to take one of the smaller river taxis from anywhere along the Chao Phraya River. Ask to get off at the Tha Thewet Ferry Pier. Because from there, it’s just a short walk to the market.
