Tasty Culinary Delights and some
Freshly Fried Critters

Street Food Seller

The Thai Street Food scene is a fascinating wonderland of culinary delights catering for all tastes. This includes a variety of interesting fried creepy crawlies for you to relish. There are few places in the world where you can simply buy street food that not only tastes good but is perfectly safe to consume. Thailand is one of them. So go on, show me your real sense of adventure.

Local Street Food on Skewers

You will see many Thai’s earning a living by catering on the streets of Thailand with a variety of mouth-watering delights. They do this not only for themselves but also to provide a special service to the locals and foreigners alike. The food is always fresh, well prepared and absolutely tasty. Don’t you just love wandering around the streets watching and observing all these daily activities? It’s so incredible how Thai’s go about their business.

A selection of local Thai Street Food

I am almost always a little wary of buying food from a street vendor, but in Thailand, you would have no problem whatsoever. Just go out there and enjoy some of these delicious street foods as you won’t be disappointed. You need not eat any of the fried insects should you so wish, but I shall not hold it against you should you wish to try some.

The same cannot be said for neighbouring Cambodia and some the other countries that I have visited. Certainly not in Egypt and other parts of Africa. One of my other favourite places in the world for delicious street food would have to be the city of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. However, there are no fried insects there.

Fried Grass Hoppers

I have always wanted to tell friends about Thailand’s alternative street food for which I personally do not have the stomach for. In fact, I am still trying to work out which part of the Thai population entertains this feeding frenzy. My Thai girlfriends all seem to shy away from the protein filled creepy crawling delights.

Well, actually they won’t be crawling should you decide to purchase some, but even if they did, your vendor would simply pop them back in the frying pan. Of course, that doesn’t mean that they are any less creepy. I call them Thai Fries. You would purchase these delicacies just the same way that you would buy takeaway fish and chips or similar. Just add salt and vinegar.

You have quite a vast and varied selection to choose from in Thailand. You could purchase either fried grasshoppers, fried crickets, fried frogs, fried giant spiders, fried scorpions and an assortment of fried plump worms and beetles. Go on, I know you’d like to take another last good look at the photos here.

Now to try and understand the meaning behind all this extra food, you would probably not be surprised to hear that the government here encourages the poorer Thai people to indulge themselves with this excellent source of protein.

Not only does it provide a fabulous food source, but it certainly cleans up the country of creepy crawlies. I have also tried to encourage these vendors to produce some sweet versions to their savoury counterparts.

Tasty Fried Scorpions on Skewers

I thought that perhaps some crunchy chocolate coated cockroaches could be considered, yet so far, nobody has taken up this seemingly lucrative gap in the market. Although Thailand is teeming with Geckos, they are yet to be destined for the frying pan. Perhaps Geckos are on the endangered species list.

Lastly, will someone please tell me how to get rid of all these damn flies. I cannot imagine what these little creatures might taste like fried, but perhaps you could. Let me know if you’ve had an exotic food experience with any of your adventures.
