Chiang Mai Weather can be a welcome relief for much of the year if you want to beat the somewhat excessive heat of southern and central Thailand. But don’t get me wrong, it can still get rather hot and humid at certain times of the year, particularly from April until July.

Take advantage and visit Chiang Mai during the months from November through to mid-February. The air is a lot fresher, the climate is a lot cooler and the skies are a lot clearer. And best of all, you don’t have the intense heat, traffic congestion or pollution as experienced in cities further south.

It’s always advisable to bring a sweater or light jacket to wear in the evenings during these months as temperatures can drop considerably though certainly not excessively. Light clothing can be worn throughout the rest of the day. In fact, travel in these northern territories can be quite pleasant during this period.

From mid-July until mid-October, it’s monsoon season and heavy downpours can be expected. Some last for an hour or two and others last for days or even weeks. So far I have been fortunate not to have experienced much of this, although I do love the rain a lot. It can be a real blessing at times.

What I also enjoy the most about Thailand, are the incredibly loud thunderstorms that occur in various parts of the country, including right here in the north. They can be somewhat earsplitting and not nearly as gentle as the ones back home. It was a real exhilarating treat when I first became aware of them. I suppose they can be terrifying if you are not familiar with such sudden outbursts.

If you, too, should enjoy the rain as much as I do, then there are plenty of inexpensive umbrellas for you to purchase should the occasion arise. Don’t forget, you are in the heart of umbrella territory and Chiang Mai is well known for this particularly beautiful and intricate artistry.

I would like to point out that being exposed to tropical rain in countries like Thailand, is not even remotely the same as experiencing the rain in cold wintry conditions as in a lot of other places around the world. To put it mildly, it’s a thrill of a lifetime to be able to wander around Thailand, all the while singing in the rain.

It can certainly add to the excitement of your journey and remember, whatever the weather in here, you can still have a great time.
