An Exotic Tropical Fruit grown in Thailand

Dragon Fruit is the most common name given to the Pitahaya or Pitaya which turns out to be family members of several cactus species. There are also a few other names, but there’s really no need for me to go into such great detail other than to describe what these fruits look and taste like.

The real reason as to why I am dedicating this page to writing about the fruits of Thailand is because there are so many wonderfully diverse and bizarre varieties here. Some you may not get the chance to see at home.

I am particularly amazed at the vast array of tropical fruit that one finds here. Take for instance those brightly coloured pink fruits covered with pointed yellow and green-tipped scales that I’d love to share with you.

What the Dragon Fruit looks like on the inside

There’s nothing quite as engaging as to leisurely wander around some of the fresh-produce markets in Thailand while admiring the exotic motley mixture of succulent fruit species that are available. There are of course many other equally pleasurable activities for you to engage in while on your holiday here, but for the moment let’s stick to the fruits.

If not at the markets, then why not take a good look next time you go for breakfast at your hotel in Thailand where you will be amazed at the immense variety of fruits that are on offer. This is the time to bring out the adventurer in you.

One fruit that really fascinated me was the Dragon Fruit and believe you me, this had nothing to do with the fact that I’m born under the Chinese astrological sign of the dragon either. It just had this peculiar look about it.

As I began to stare at this strange fruit for the first time, I became so captivated by its bewitching appearance all the while wondering in silence as to what it might taste like. The white interior had all these little black seeds bedded in it. Give it a try I said and I encourage you to do likewise.

The Dragon Fruit Tree

The Dragon or Pitaya Fruit, grown in Thailand has a bright pinkish exterior with its interior made up of white flesh and hundreds of edible black seeds. The flesh has a subtly sweet taste and is slightly crunchy. Nevertheless, it’s extremely refreshing. You could say that the taste you’ll experience is somewhere between that of a kiwi and a pear.

There is an added health benefit to eating this fruit as they contain lots of good fiber, antioxidants, and nutrients including Vitamin C, phosphorus, and calcium. They are also low in calories. And there’s also a small yellow variety from Southeast Asia that looks a lot like one of those regular Prickly Pears.
